Update: What are the new COVID Christmas rules?

Over the weekend, PM Boris Johnson addressed the nation to announce the planned relaxation of the Covid-19 rules over the Christmas holidays have been scrapped. Tier four measures were also introduced for much of the south-east of England where the new Covid-19 strain is most prominent.

England

In England's tier four areas, residents will only be allowed to celebrate Christmas with members of their household and support bubbles. They will not be allowed to travel to other tiers to see family and friends. In areas in tiers one, two and three Christmas bubbles will no longer be across five days. Instead, three households coming together will now only be allowed on Christmas Day.

Scotland

In Scotland, Christmas celebrations will be limited to Christmas Day itself, and not the previous five-day window that was planned. The number of people and households that can mix still apply - a maximum of eight people from three households will be allowed to gather indoors together during Christmas day. However, it is advised to minimise the numbers of people where possible and be mindful of those most vulnerable within families.

From Boxing day, Scotland will go into tier four lockdown restrictions for three weeks, with  non-essential shops, pubs and restaurants shutting.

Wales

In Wales, a national lockdown came into effect at midnight on Saturday. FM Mark Drakeford said the rules would mean non-essential retail, close contact services, gyms and leisure centres and hospitality would close at “end of trading” on Saturday.

These rules are planned to be relaxed for one day only, with only two households allowed to form a bubble for Christmas Day.
